Safety & Process
Laser-cleaning work requires appropriate planning, exclusion controls, protective equipment and site-specific procedures. Nova Laser Technologies assesses each work environment before operation and coordinates requirements with the client or principal contractor.
This page outlines our general approach to safety and process management. Specific requirements are determined for each project.
Laser Safety Officer (LSO) Operated
Laser cleaning operations are performed by an LSO (Laser Safety Officer), with a strong focus on controlled operation, site safety and appropriate laser safety procedures.
Site-Specific Risk Assessment
Each project receives a risk assessment tailored to the specific site, environment and scope of work.
Controlled Work Area
Exclusion zones and controlled access are established around the laser-cleaning operation.
Appropriate Laser PPE
Laser-specific personal protective equipment is provided and maintained for all personnel in the controlled area.
Fume and Contaminant Considerations
Fume extraction and air-quality management are assessed and implemented according to the work environment.
Height Access Planning
Work at height is planned according to site conditions, equipment requirements and the rated capacity of the selected access platform.
Substrate and Coating Assessment
The substrate material, coating type and contamination are assessed before work begins.
Client and Contractor Coordination
Work is coordinated with clients, principal contractors and other trades to manage site requirements.
Pre-Start and Handover Procedures
Pre-start meetings, toolbox talks and handover procedures are conducted according to site and project requirements.
Initial Surface Assessment
Before any laser-cleaning work begins, the substrate, coating, contamination and surface condition are assessed. This helps determine appropriate parameters, expected results and any specific risks or considerations. A test patch may be recommended as part of this assessment.
Controlled Work Area
An exclusion zone is established around the laser-cleaning operation. The size and configuration of this zone depends on the laser class, work environment, surface reflectivity and surrounding activities. Physical barriers, signage and controlled access are used to manage the exclusion zone.
Personal Protective Equipment
All personnel within the controlled area wear laser-specific protective eyewear rated for the laser wavelength in use. Additional PPE including respiratory protection, hearing protection and appropriate clothing may be required depending on the application.
Fume and Residue Management
The laser-cleaning process generates fumes, particulate and vapour from the contamination being removed. Appropriate extraction and filtration equipment is deployed based on the contamination type, work environment and volume of material being removed.
Working in Sensitive Surroundings
When working near sensitive equipment, active operations, heritage materials or occupied spaces, additional precautions and coordination may be required. Each situation is assessed and managed according to the specific environment.
Height Access Planning
Work at height is planned according to site conditions, equipment requirements and the rated capacity of the selected access platform. Where practicable, the main laser equipment remains safely positioned at ground level while the operator accesses elevated work areas using a suitable EWP or large scissor lift. Access method, equipment positioning, reach and load requirements are assessed before work begins.
Electrical and Equipment Planning
Laser-cleaning equipment requires suitable electrical supply, ventilation for the laser unit and positioning for the extraction system. These requirements are identified during project planning and coordinated with the site.
Site Coordination
Work is coordinated with clients, principal contractors, other trades and site management. Pre-start meetings, toolbox talks, permit requirements and communication protocols are established before work begins.
Test Patches
Where appropriate, a controlled test patch is completed before larger work begins. This demonstrates the expected results, surface finish, production rate and any specific considerations for the project. Test-patch results can be documented and shared for review.
Inspection and Handover
On completion, the cleaned area is reviewed against the agreed scope and requirements. Before-and-after documentation can be provided where agreed. The surface is prepared for the next stage of work where applicable.
